Best Anarchy Investment: Seeds

5,000 seeds at $80 is 1.6 cents per seed.  One seed can easily generate a dollars worth of food making them your best investment.  Think about it; turn $80 into $5,000.

Texas Silver Coins

Texas initiated their own Bullion Depository for storing precious metals, much like Fort Knox does for the US.  Now they have their own Texas Silver Coin.  Do they know something that others don't?

Investing in Silver is a popular form of financial security for many Preppers.  They believe that Silver vs Paper Dollars is a no brainer. Check it out and form your own opinion.

Texas Bullion Depository

The Creation of the First Ever State Authorized Bullion Depository

The Texas Bullion Depository Bill was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott on June 12, 2015, officially establishing the first ever state-administered precious metals bullion depository (HB 483; originally filed and submitted by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R - Southlake)). The establishment of the Texas Bullion Depository creates an official depository operation by the State of Texas, with depository services provided by Lone Star Tangible Assets of Austin, Texas.

This is an opportunity to store precious metals in a secure location.  You can even put part of your 401K or IRA in this investment.

In the event of a SHTF scenario, having about 10% of your savings in Silver or Gold could be a lifesaver.  Note:  I am NOT a Financial Advisor.

A Utah law promotes the use of Gold and Silver for daily purchases, by making them tax free.

Should you be investing in precious metals? Do your own investigation and make your own decision, but the State of Texas and Utah have certainly made some investments.

Prepper Savings Plan

Getting ahead in life means saving your money, so here is what I believe is a good plan to be financially prepared.  Note:  A real Prepper is prepared for anything, including losing your job and getting old and retiring. Disclaimer: I am not a Financial Advisor.

We will have short, medium and long term (retirement) savings.  Many Rich people get/stay rich by acting poor, while many Poor people got/stay poor by acting rich.  So it is important to live within our means, or even better, below.
  1. First save have some Emergency Cash stored at your house. Start with enough to buy a weeks worth of groceries if the power & ATM's are out of service.  This Emergency Cash link can give you some ideas on how much and why.
  2. Then save the equivalent of three months net income (minimum).  Loosing a job is fairly common in today's job market, and this will protect your home, automobile, and more importantly, your family. I would keep about 2/3 of this in the bank, and 1/3 in cash at home in a hidden safe. There are some very affordable fire proof boxes and wall safes.
  3. At the same time, sign up for your company 401K for the maximum that the employer will match. For example, a small (5%) 401K savings deduction costing us $62.50, we will realize a huge savings of $192.31.  This should generally be invested in a mutual fund that is appropriate risk for your age, but there are many options.

  4. Set up a budget and stick with it. Include savings as well as a modest Prepper Budget.  The Beginner Prepper Plan has a starter budget for just over $500.  You should also have several weeks worth of Food and Emergency Water, stored in your home.  These links will assist.
  5. Short term savings for things like a car or down payment on a house are next. Don't buy new cars because they depreciate too much in the first year.  Instead buy a 2+ year old model that will cost much less but should be in good condition for many years to come.  The payments will be less, so take the difference between between the used car payment and the new car payment and save it to apply to your next car. When that savings account reaches a dollar amount sufficient for buying another car, then you can do so, but not before.
  6. When it comes time to buy a house, select one below your means.  If you qualify for a $100,000 home loan (for round numbers and to make it easy to do the math), buy a $50,000 house and make payments as if it was a $100k house.  Within approximately 5 years, you will own this house.  Sell your $50K house, use this to make a down payment on your $100k house.  Make payments as if it was a $100k loan, and again in about 5 years, you will have this $100k house paid for.  Then take these house payments and start saving them, or at least 50%. At this point consider a Prepper Retreat.  Building your own energy efficient solar powered home is worth considering.  At the very least, you should have some Emergency DIY Power Supply for an Extended Power Outage.
  7. Where your home is located is important. There are Common Home Security elements however City Home Security is different from Country Home Security, and a country home with woods allows some Wilderness Survival potential as well as a Prepper Garden.
  8. In time, you have a paid for house, a car you bought with cash, money being saved for your next car, so now you are ready for investing.  Diversity and regular additions to your investments are the key, but more important is that you start early. Let me explain why.
  9.  Suppose two twin brothers start saving $2,000 per year.  Brother 1 starts at age 21 and saves for 6 years.  Brother 2 starts saving at age 27 and saves for 36 years.  When they retire at 65 years of age, Brother 1 has more money than Brother 2, because of the magic of compound interest.  This is how the Rich get richer by investing and loaning money to Poor people who borrow money to buy everything and get poorer.
  10. In our home buying example above(#6), IF we had financed a $100,000 house for 30 years and paid 7% compound interest, we would end up paying about $250,000.  This is again, how the Rich get richer and the Poor get poorer.  You want to be earning compound interest, NOT paying it!
  11. Stock Market Mutual Funds,  Real Estate - rental property and about 10% Silver are my favorite investments, but there are many options that you can consider.  You should consult a financial advisor on where to put your money. This should give you a few ideas.
Disclaimer: I am not a Financial Advisor.

Silver vs Paper Dollars

In 1964, both of these had the same value.

Today, the one ounce silver dollar is worth 15 to 20 times more.

In our blog Investing for Preppers we show how much each one of these dollars can buy today as well as in 1964, the last year our money had silver in it. But today, lets talk about what form of cash you need to store for emergencies.

Clearly we don't want to be spending silver dollars during a 3-day power outage.  At the same time, we won't be able to spend paper dollars after a total economic collapse. So we need paper dollars for short term events and sliver dollars for long term events.

So the question arises, at what point does the paper dollar start to diminish in value and silver starts becoming necessary for purchases?

In August 1921, the Germans made the first billion mark (gold) payment for World War I reparations. This immediately triggered a 1/3 fall in the value of the Paper Mark.   We call this Trigger Day
Imagine that over night everything that cost $1,00 yesterday, costs $1.50 today.

June 24, 1922, 10 months later, the Germany were struggling to make the war reparation payments, when several government officials were assassinated. The paper mark value dropped to 300 paper marks = 1 gold mark.

Now everything that cost $1.00 only 10 months ago, costs $300 today.

January 1923, 18 months after Trigger Day, the German paper mark drops to 4,281 paper marks to 1 gold mark.
February 1923, 1 gold mark   =                    6,650 paper marks.
May 1923, 1 gold mark          =                  11,355 paper marks.
June 1923, 1 gold mark          =                  26,202 paper marks.
July1923, 1 gold mark            =                  84,186 paper marks.
August 1923, 1 gold mark      =             1,100,632 paper marks.
2 years after the first drop, things that used to cost $1 now cost over $1,000,000.
September 1923, 1 gold mark =          23,500,000 paper marks,
October 1923, 1 gold mark     =     6,100,000,000 paper marks
November 1923, 1 gold mark = 522,300,000,000 paper marks,

Falling in value by 300 marks in roughly 300 days, a silver dollar that initially cost $20 is worth more than $20 in paper money after 20 days.  For this reason I might suggest that we need enough cash in paper dollars to survive for 3 weeks (21 days).

Considering inflation, how much money is this? Suppose we want to have the equivalent cash to buy $100 worth of groceries and supplies per week; here is how much we need to have on hand.  The first column is how much you would spend each day, the last column is a running total including inflation of how much you would need to have the equivalent of $100/week of grocery money. So after 7 days, your hundred dollar ($100) budget (left column) would require having four hundred dollars ($400) after 7 days of inflation.

If you wanted to allow $200 per week, simply double this amount; $300, triple this amount.

After we have this amount of cash in small bills (NOT $100's), then we should start saving silver coins (not bars).  So how much in silver coins do we need?

In our blog Investing for Preppers we show the value of silver in terms of groceries and essentials.  From this I would suggest that we need enough to buy groceries, supplies, seeds, fertilizer and gardening tools to prepare for long term sustainable living.  Depending on the time of the year, you could need as much as 9 months supply to get through the winter, plant in the spring and harvest a crop.

Considering that the silver will have at least 10 times the value of the dollar and will be sustainable, you should figure on having 10 silver dollars or equivalent US silver coins for each $100 of weekly budget above.  So for 9 months (worst case) x 4.3 weeks per month, or $387 in silver coin.  I would suggest that half of this be in silver Eagles and the other half in sliver quarters and dimes. At the sames time, it would be good to own some silver or gold mining stocks, up to 10% of your net worth.

So for each hundred dollars of weekly groceries and supplies that you need to budget, you will require $3,300 of cash and $387 dollars (face value) of silver coin.  Its also good to consider having a few items for Barter.

You can use this math to prepare at incremental levels.  Instead of having three weeks worth of cash ($3,300) you can start by having 1 weeks worth or $400. Then when you have your cash, you can get your silver coins a few at a time.  In the end, these will hold their value fairly well unlike some supplies with a shelf life that will expire and be worthless some day.

This should be one part of an Incremental Prepper Plan.

New Years Resolution

Happy New Year! As a New Years resolution, lets pledge to protect our families against common disasters for our area. Events like earthquakes or severe weather such as hurricanes, tornadoes, winter storms, freezing cold and whatever other disasters that are likely to occur over the next few years. With all the rioting going on, we should include that too.  At the very least, put a plan in place.

The following is an excerpt from the Prepper Handbook that can be previewed for free on Amazon.

Prepper Incremental Strategy
Now let’s talk about common sense prepping. Not going overboard or becoming obsessed, but rather build your preparations slowly over time. Few of us have unlimited funds to go out and buy everything we need at once. Therefore, we must organize, prioritize, and develop our preparations over time. I call this our Incremental Strategy Plan. As you read this book, you should develop your own plan. The following table is an excellent example to follow and can be tailored to meet your specific needs.

This table gives you several columns that represent the approximate times that you might be able to survive with no outside support. The columns and rows are in order of priority. Starting on the left is the minimum level of preparations that you should have. Start at the top row of the first column and work down. Once you achieve the first column level titled “0 – 25%, 7 days” then it is time to move across and start securing the second column of preparations titled “26 – 50%, 30 days.”  Continue this process until you are comfortable with your level of preparation.

You will notice the first item shown in the first column and first row is Ammo and at least one firearm. It doesn’t matter what preparations you have in place; you won’t be able to keep them unless you are armed.

This table is an example to present the incremental strategy concept. The actual priorities may vary depending on your situation. If you live near a nuclear power plant, NBC (Nuclear, Biological & Chemical) Suits are a higher priority. If you live near a chemical plant, refinery, or areas with frequent wild fires, then Gas Masks & extra filters become a higher priority. If you live in a crowded area with no place to go (Bug Out), then you need more security and motion detection, community organization and weapons to share with neighbors for strength in numbers.  See the post Urban Survival Plan
