Sex Education

Here is a very wise approach to teaching sex education from Greg Koukl with Stand to Reason.com  that every parent should read and share with others.

We are a diverse community, and the school board values diversity. That means there are diverse understandings about controversial issues like human sexuality.

Traditionally, parents have been the ones to carefully inform their children about these issues at a time and in a way appropriate for their age, and within the protected environment of the family. The government—represented here by the school board—has not traditionally been allowed to interfere with educating issues so critical to family and so appropriate to private parental nurturing of their children. To do so would be to have individual family beliefs and values overridden by whatever group happened to be in power at the time.

No one set of personal values should be allowed to dictate the beliefs of our children in a public education system that includes such diverse groups as Muslims, and Christians, and Orthodox Jews, and Buddhists, and humanists, and atheists, and so many others.

Public values shared by all, on the other hand—values like honesty, kindness, truth seeking, integrity, respect, etc.—should be encouraged by all, including the schools, since they are agreed upon by all and are not controversial.

However, contentious and divisive personal views should not be forced upon our children. This is indoctrination and replaces the parent’s rightful role.

When government takes over the responsibility of informing our children’s private and personal moral values instead of the parents and individual families doing so, it is a step towards oppression and a significant and serious violation of the diversity and multicultural respect the school board stands for.

If any group in power gets to force their personal values on our kids, then when a different group gets power, they will be able to force their personal values on that group’s kids. Neither is consistent with diversity, tolerance, or appropriate American liberty.

Please, I respectfully implore you: Leave that job to the parents of the children that belong to them…and not to the state.

Thank you.

Home Schooling for Preppers

After an economic or societal breakdown, i.e. the proverbial SHTF scenario, it will be necessary to educate your children at home, which takes on a whole new meaning under these circumstances.  While we still need the academic school training, there is much more that must be learned, many of these Prepper Skills for Youth we should already be teaching.  So lets look at home schooling from different perspectives.
  1. Academics - Math, Science, English
  2. Basic Life Skills -  Farming, Ranching, Food Preservation, Hunting, Fishing, Wilderness Survival, Delivering Babies, First Aid, Sewing, Business, Mechanics, Electrical and this list could go on and on.
  3. Art - creativity would clearly seem to be the least important skill for survival as indicated below in Maslow's hierarchy of needs however music has been something that makes life enjoyable after a hard days work, and brings people together. Mental health is important, and randomly scheduled group events are helpful, as long as they don't compromise security. In fact, security should be increased as the noise could be risky.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Regardless of what you are teaching, having a hard copy set of encyclopedias (below) is a great resource.  Old copies of these can often be purchased at estate sales or re-sale Book Stores.  Having a CD version can also be helpful, IF you have electricity, which may not be the case after an EMP.

For Academic Books, W.W. Norton seems to have a good selection of school books.

Another great source of educational materials are College Book stores, where they sell used books at a discount, and Amazon.com, however they are globalist with anti-American sentiment and should only be used as a last resort. Further, buying lots of books, guns, ammo, etc. on line &/or not paying with cash WILL get you flagged as a potential risk with the NSA and FBI, who track every transaction, phone call, text message, etc.

Every year, there are many school books retired and replaced with new (more liberal) ones, so older books may actually be preferable.

For Basic Skill books,  our Prepper Handbook list of Best Prepper Books will provides many known good books to have for basic skills.  We would welcome your suggestions on some good books in the comments below.

Ideally, we build our own good library of books ahead of time, but if not, then Salvaging books from a school or library may be necessary. If this is not an option, then we may borrow, Barter or Purchase the necessary books from others if still available.

Last, but not least, a Bible is mandatory, and a good bible scholar as a Teacher is priceless.

Teachers are essential; the more the better. Different Teachers for different subjects is the ideal scenario with each having their area of specialization, especially at the higher grade levels.

School must be scheduled around farm work schedules; off during the spring planting (spring break), off during the summer harvest, and in school though out the winter. A college type schedule with some courses on Monday, Wednesday and other courses on Tuesday, Thursday.

Early to bed, early to rise is also a good schedule as students will likely be living a farming life style; up at dawn, break at lunch during the heat of the day, work again in the evening and off to bed shortly after sun down.

Educating our children is an investment in the future and one that must be taken seriously.

Homeschool 101

HOMESCHOOL 101 - FOR BEGINNERS

It's decision time! You already know that your desire is to stay at home and homeschool your kids. How do you pull everything together and actually do it?

lequzhai.com
Here is a simple step-by-step guide and checklist to assist families who are planning to homeschool. The order may vary depending on your family's circumstances. We encourage you to print this page and put a check mark as you complete each step. Homeschool 101 was born out of our nine (9) years of homeschooling experience. May this be of help to you! God Bless you in your homeschooling endeavor!

If you click on any word(s) highlighted in blue, a new browser window will open taking you to a related resource to help you accomplish that particular step. You do not have to leave this page to look at the recommended resource.

HOMESCHOOL 101 - FOR THOSE PLANNING TO HOMESCHOOL

 1)   Pray for God's guidance and wisdom. Read the Bible for direction. Some passages to meditate on (below) are Deutoronomy 6:4-9, Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:4 and Luke 2:52. A suggested daily reading/devotion is the book of Proverbs. There are 31 Chapters, 1 for each day of the month. Proverbs is God's instruction book for daily living, including parenting! "A proverb a day keeps the devil away!"

 2)   Husband and wife, discuss and agree together on homeschooling.

 3)   Sit down with your children and discuss your decision to homeschool.

 4)   Get your house in order. Establish routines, chores, and consistent discipline. Limit time spent on TV and computer games. Recommended parenting resources are available at Growing Families International, Focus On The Family, or DoorPosts. We highly recommend Growing Kids God's Way Parenting Class and the book For Instructions in Righteousness by DoorPosts.

5)  Get your marriage in order. The primary support for your homeschool is the husband and wife relationship. If there are unresolved issues between you and your spouse, it is more likely that your homeschool will be unstable, distracted and disorganized. Suggested resources to strengthen your marriage and family are available through Family Life and Gary Smalley. Try to go to a Family Life Marriage Conference. Also read the following books by Gary Smalley - "For Better or Best" and "If Only He Knew."

6)   Read books on homeschooling (i.e. Homeschool - The Right Choice by Christopher Klicka).   See Below for Recommended Books.

7)   Talk to experienced homeschooling families, ask lots of questions! Join homeschoolingonline message boards and forums.

8)   Investigate your local homeschooling laws. Great resource is HSLDA - Homeschool Legal DefenseAssociation or your local State Department of Education.

9)  To protect your right to homeschool, join HSLDA. Without any legal plan in place, it can cost you thousands of dollars to defend your legal rights. Bad things can happen to good people! Homeschoolers are not immune to legal troubles.

10)  Join HomeschoolSupport Groups for great ideas and support from other local homeschoolers.

12)  Research and order your curriculum materials. Check out Satellite/Correspondence Schools for full curriculum package and services. For independent curriculum and record-keeping, visit Curriculum Publishers and Suppliers. Request the most current printed catalogs available and read them.

13)  Plan your school year. Set up lesson plans and daily schedule.

14)  Set up your classroom or homeschooling corner with proper furnishing, supplies and record keeping materials.

15)  If applicable, send your Letter of Intent To Homeschool to the local public school. This letter is in accordance to your state's homeschooling laws.

16)  Lastly, praise God for all the many wonderful and memorable homeschooling days that you will spend at home with your children!

JUST A FEW OF MANY BIBLE VERSES TO MEDITATE ON:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Luke 2:52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

What is a Prepper?

Preparing is a basic human function. We prep for a visit to the grocery store by making a list. Eggs, check. Bread, check. Milk, check. You can even prepare mentally without physically doing anything."Prepping" is an extension of these normal preparations everyone already does. It is usually considered extreme due to the exposure it has garnered lately, being tied into ludicrous scenarios that grow more and more far fetched by the day. Those that use prepping to get ready for inevitable disasters or emergencies are "Preppers."

At TruePrepper, we are here to clear the air. Prepping is not about daydreaming on doomsday scenarios, it is about being ready for threats likely and unlikely that will be thrown your way. Prepping is about keeping yourself and your loved ones safe from harm and staying in control in unavoidable situations. Five steps can help you stay in control not only when SHTF, but in everyday scenarios as well:
  1. Identify your Threats
  2. Determine/Prioritize your Risks
  3. Make a Plan
  4. Develop a Kit
  5. Train and Prepare
Identify your Threats
The first step is to take a look at all the threats we have identified on this website. Come back when you are done browsing, but it is quite a few! These are just threats we are making you aware of. Try to branch out and look at what your neighbors have experienced, conventional and unconventional. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:
  • Is your neighborhood prone to burglaries? How often?
  • Do you live in a flood plain or where wildfires occur frequently?
  • Do you live near a nuclear plant or a fault line?
  • Do you live near a train that transports hazardous chemicals?
  • Does your neighbor feed bears for fun?
You probably have the idea by now, and we could go on for pages. Writing the threats down will help you remember them for the next steps. There are many threats to your well being that we have not listed on this page, or ranked with our TrueRisk risk analysis system (such as bear attacks). These can be categorized as 'common sense' threats or 'unknown' threats. Common sense threats are threats that are so prevalent, we hope you have already considered them. This includes the possibility of a fatal car wreck, developing a debilitating health issue, and losing your job and having financial hardship to name a few. Unknown threats are threats not conceivable, or we have such little information on them we cannot judge the risk accurately.
Determine and Prioritize your Risks
Determining your risk to the threats you have identified is often overlooked in the prepping community, but it is one of the cornerstones of preparedness. Conducting a risk analysis is very important for prioritizing how you spend your time and physical resources. A risk analysis is completed by  comparing the impact of a threat with the frequency that you anticipate that threat to occur. If you determine your risk levels wrong, and then prioritize your preparations accordingly, you may end up looking foolish or even worse, not being around to look foolish. Recently I read a blog post on how a well known prepper lost their home in a house fire. While my condolences go out to them and their family (nobody was injured, thankfully), I couldn't help but wonder if they had prioritized properly. Years of stockpiled food stores, energy solutions, and survival gear lost to one of the most common personal disasters that can affect a family. Take a look at our TrueRisk index, where at TruePrepper we have conducted a general risk analysis for you that you can tailor to your need. You will notice that almost everyone needs to prepare for house fires and home invasions first and foremost. Risk analysis and prioritization is important.
Make a Prepper Plan
Your plan can be written or verbal, small or large, a single plan or multiple plans, but it has to be shared and practiced. You have identified the threats, decided which you need to address and in what priority. Start with the high priority threats and plan accordingly. Your plan should include in the very least communication information, safe locations depending on threat, and ways to avoid threats and be more safe. Talk with your family about your plans for various disasters, emergencies, and survival scenarios. Share with trusted friends and ask for critiques to identify weak points in your planning.
Develop a Prepper Kit
Your kit can be generic, such as a simple disaster/survival kit, or it can be custom tuned to all threats you anticipate using specialized kits.  The kit guides on TruePrepper are meant to get you started on developing different kits based on your needs. Our gear reviews are here to flesh out your prepper arsenal based on our collective knowledge and experience with the gear we share. Be wary of some items targeted to preppers online and in stores, as it is not always "you get what you pay for."
Train and Prepare
Set a schedule to practice, evaluate, and revise your emergency plans- at least annually. How do you prepare for the threats besides practicing your plan? You can mitigate them before they happen. If you live in a flood plain, look into flood insurance. Stay fit. You will be surprised at how much that helps all aspects of your life- not just during emergencies. Be resourceful. Keep learning new things- never stop learning. Survival skills are not only a huge help in making yourself self-sufficient, they are pretty fun to learn too. Last of all, although it is serious business to prepare for what life brings your way, try to have fun with it. If you find you enjoy prepping, you are more likely to stick with it and transfer the importance of being prepared to people you interact with.

Prepper Training Drills

During an emergency, it is easy to become indecisive. Unsure about what to do, people often freeze and do nothing.  Such delays can be life threatening in some cases.  But having rehearsed your plans makes executing them second nature.

http://www.primitiveskills.com/
It is good to have plans, but we must be able to execute them, and that requires practice. So what are some good training drills to practice?  Anything that you have formal written plans for should be practiced.  In addition to that, here are some suggested Training Drills:
  1.  Bug Out Time - there are Red Flag Warnings that it is bug out time, but will we recognize them and respond in a timely & sensible way?
  2. SHTF Day One exercise - what do you do the first day you realize things are falling apart?
  3. Home Invasion - Often there is no warning, requiring that you respond quickly and respond. Group Security Drills Country Home Security Plan
  4. Pandemic Quarantine procedures - don't just let people come and join your group.
  5. Shooting Skills - Target Practice, especially for beginners.  A .22 Long Rifle or BB gun are the best for beginners and still fun for old timers.
  6. Group Movement Exercises for your Security Team.  How do you safely move from point A to point B when the SHTF?
  7. Power Outage - practice being out of power for 1 day, 2 days, .... days.  Its ok to leave your refrigerator and freezer running, but turn the breaker off for everything else and practice surviving without electricity.
  8.  Fishing Skills are essential to Wilderness Survival and should be practices frequently.
    Survival Fishing
3 Odd Techniques for Primitive Fishing
How to catch your own live bait
    Noodling
  9. Camping - outdoor skills are essential.  Camp out with the family and practice living off the land with only what you can carry in your Survival Back Pack.
  10. First Aid practice is good.  Take Red Cross CPR classes or other such training.
Beyond this, document and practice your own Prepper plans.
