Alone Season 9 Pack List

Episode 1

Labrador Canada, we meet the cast, and see them dropped off at the location they drew in a lottery.  The last one standing will win $500,000.  You can meet the cast here:  Alone Season 9 Cast

Day 1 - Temperature: 61 F  8:47 AM

Karie sees a storm brewing and sets up a temporary shelter, which turns out to be a wise move.

Benji - 10:12 AM

We see a large body of water that looks like a river.  He begins to scout the area for a camp sight.  With 30 years experience using a conventional bow, he feels confident. His goal is to stay 102 days, a new record.  He finds some bunch berries and harvests a few hand fulls, before he sees a squirrel. His second arrow bags a 1/2 pound squirrel with his bow.  Harvesting early food is a good sign, but then the rain comes and he gets soaking wet.

1:32 PM

Jessie is along a high river bank, building a walking stick, which is a good first tool, serving as a spear.  She scouts the area to find a place to set up a temporary camp.  Obvious bear tracks are found near a small stream. She sets up a simple tarp shelter.

10:47 PM 48F

Jesse can hear a bear panting.

11:51 PM

The bear is an estimated 100' from her and moving closer.

Day 2 - 10:24 AM 58 F

Karie Lee has a lot of bug bites from the night, and continues to scout her area out.  She sees a grouse, right out in the open, but misses with her bow.  She sees him again, but moves forward to fast and spooks him.  Looks like she was trying a long shot (literally).

12:17 PM

Karie Lee is stalking a grouse after missing, getting impatient and spooks him.  She shoots a second shot and bags a 2 lb grouse with her bow.  Harvesting early food like this is a good sign of her skills, despite several mistakes made before getting him.

2:49 PM  54 F

Juan Pablo is along the river, scouting the area and struggling to walk.  He sees a fresh pile of bear scat and is hoping to bag a bear with his bow. He selects a temporary camp sight and gets started when he sees a squirrel.  He goes after it clumsily it seems, making lots of noise and spooks a large animal.  He finds some trash food cans and makes a stove pipe.  His shelter is well above average at this point.

9:17 PM

Juan continues to work on his fire place and shelter.

Day 3 - 7:54 AM

Jacques is also located along a river.  His shelter is tall and narrow like an A frame military tent, but with some solid wood poles.  He finds what he believe is fresh bear scat, but it looks old to me, just still wet.  Scouting around, he found a large foot trap in good working condition.

Day 4 - 7:23 AM

Igor awakes sleeping out in the open on a rock, wrapped in his tarp.  He is along way from the water and hasn't had any food in 4 days.  No shelter, no food and swarms of files biting him, is not a good sign for his chances of winning.  His location appears to be less desirable than many of the others.  He makes a Bladderrack stew, a form of sea weed.

10:47 AM

Jacques has a growling stomach laying on his red sleeping bag, when he sees a squirrel high up in a tree.  He shoots and gets a 1/2 lb Squirrel with his first bow shot. He spooks a grouse near camp and is breathing heavy when he takes a shot. He believes he hit it,

11:27 AM

Jacques is looking for a grouse that he shot but flew off with his arrow in it. He finds the 2 lb grouse killed with his bow. by seeing his large RED arrow feathers.

1:31 PM

Benji put on 36 lbs to prepare for this event.  Local regulations only allow fly rod or dip net for fishing.  He plans to build a tenkara Japanese fishing rod which is a 400 year old method. Each participant was provide with 5 flies to use as fish bait.

2:26 PM

Benji is fly fishing and catches a 6" fish, then another , then another, for a total of 12 or about 3 lbs of fish with a fishing pole.

So far, there has been 5 pounds of food harvested with a bow, and 3 pounds with a fly fishing line for a total of 8 pounds of meat harvested.

Benji got 3 pounds of fish and a 1/2 pound squirrel for a total of 3.5 pounds, followed by Jaques who got a 1/2 pound squirrel and a 2 pound grouse, for a total of 2.5 pounds.  Karie got a 2 pound grouse.  This is 8 pounds total.

Episode 2

Labrador Canada, we meet the cast, and see them dropped off at the location they drew in a lottery.  The last one standing will win $500,000.  You can meet the cast here:  Alone Season 9 Cast

Day 1

Adam, Tom, Terry, Teimojn were introduced briefly

12:11 PM

We learn that Teimojin is ex-military and an emergency room doctor as he seeks a campsite. He builds an A-Frame tent

Day 2 - 9:32 AM

Terry is watching a harbor seal, which is a potential source of food.  Terry is a commercial fisherman in Alaska 4 months of the year, and then backpack the remainder of the year. He soon has an A-Frame tent from his tarp.  He left his tinder bundle out in the rain and must find more to start a fire.

3:32  PM

Terry works to start a fire using a very potent fire rod, but as dark sets in, he still has no fire.

8:24 PM, 47 F

Terry is still struggling to build a fire in the dark to boil some water for drinking.

Day 3 9:12 AM, 40 F

Tom is eating Bunchberries, looking for food with his bow and 9 arrows. He shoots a ½ lb squirrel with his bow.  Which he cooks and eats.

Day 5 - 8:43 AM

Adam is a tree house carpenter and alpaca shearer and has sailed the ocean for 90-day trips.

10:09

Tom is building a solid lean-to with boughs on the roof for insulation

1:58,

He is using moss for the side walls which is a better insulator than logs.  He uses some clear plastic for a window to provide light and builds an off-the-ground bed platform.  At this point, he has probably the best shelter and spent less than a day building it.

Day 6 - 7:07 AM, 39 F

Terry finally starts a fire and boils some water to drink.  He seems exhausted and has no shelter but is just starting to build a minimalistic A-frame shelter with his tarp.  Now he is going fishing, and wading out in the river.  Local regs only allow fly fishing.  He hooks a fish.

6:27 PM

Terry works his fish to the bank before landing a 2 lb brook trout with is his fishing pole.

Day 7 - 1:04 PM,  33F

Teimojin is building his shelter, and A-frame and then starts digging his Dakota fire pit.  A low fire pit and high bed keeps you warmer. He has an inlet to the base of the fire for air intake, and an outlet near the middle to exhaust smoke.  He fortifies it with a foot of river clay.  He quickly has fire, in a matter of seconds with what looks like a hex or square fire rod.

Day 8 – 1:58 PM

Tom is trying to make a streamer from his hair and a squirrel tail for fly fishing.  With the success the other have had, this is potentially a waste of time.  He hangs a fish and has to get down in the water but catches 3 fish about 2 lbs each, 6 pounds using his fishing pole.

Day 10 – 10:23 AM  44 F

Jacques builds a pole and goes fishing and quickly catches a 3 Lb Brook Trout with his fishing pole.  Instead of trying to catch more while the fish were biting, he cleans the fish and begins to cook it on a stick over the fire.  He has perhaps the second best shelter so far, behind Tom.

6:29 PM

Jacques feels like he is doing well, but loneliness is looming heavy on his mind.

Day 11- 10:11 AM

Adam standing in front of his nice moss house departs to go hunting with his Bow and 9 Arrows.  Arrows were previously limited to 6.

2:27 PM

Adam is hunting and sees a grouse high in a tree, a sure way to lose an arrow. He shoots twice and misses both times, and has lost two arrows with no grouse to show for it.

Day 12 – 10:31 AM

Jacques is looking at his stomach fat reserves and has lost 10% of his body weight since day 1.  He begins to chop wood, which is a waste of time and energy.  He should be using large logs and burning them in half. He hears a squirrel and gets his bow to go hunting.

12:23 PM

Jacques is stalking a squirrel, shoots and misses, goes for another shot and kills a ½ lb Squirrel with his bow.  It makes him sad to kill the squirrel.   He cooks and eats his squirrel, but probably should have hunted for another one, while they were likely active.

2:54 PM

Adam is looking to make a new fishing pole, a better one.  He is using an axe to clean up a spruce tree, and trim it down to a workable fishing pole size.  He uses the gromets from his tarp to make fishing line guides.  He may wish he had those gromets when the wind starts blowing hard.

3:52 PM

Adam is fishing and quickly catches about 10 small fish weighing about 7 pounds total, with his fishing rod.  Good to catch as many as possible, while they are biting as they will feed much less when the weather gets colder.

6:04 PM

Adam is eating fish around his campfire with a good stack of firewood in the smokey background.  He is eating with a nice wooden spoon that he apparently made.

Day 14 – 9:43 PM

Jacques is thinking about the squirrel he shot and there is something that seems inherently wrong.  He is really sad… It doesn’t look like he has the toughness to last. His favorite times have been with family, not in the woods alone.

Day 15 – 7:49 AM

Jacques is Tapping Out, on Day 15.  He didn’t even last as long as the Naked & Afraid 21-day contestants who don’t have a pack full of luxury, but rather only one item and are naked.  How embarrassing this would be to me if I were in his position.

9 Remain

Episode 3

9 Remain

Day 12 – 9:21 AM  (three days earlier) 37 F

Jessie has not made much progress on her long-term shelter, but shows us what she does have.  She is digging out the side of a hill and using the sod for insulation.

1:38 PM

Igor is holding a pot of bladderwrack sea weed, as he has been unsuccessful fishing.  He has lost 19 lbs since day 1.  We see him building a log shelter all day with not much to show for it.  At sun set he sees a 2 lb grouse and got it with his saw.

6:48 PM

Igor is cooking and eating his grouse.

Day 13

10:29

Adam is digging clay for his cabin and harvesting some grass to make a cob mix for his fireplace which is smoking up his tightly sealed cabin.  Using a wattle and daub construction, i.e. weave of small limbs covered with clay.  He hears a grouse and tries to kill him with a club.

11:49 AM

Adam misses his grouse.  Trying to use a stick was not a smart move, but he has been caching a few fish each day.  He continues to work on his shelter chimney. It works great at carrying the smoke away.  He has a good cabin and some fire wood.

12:42 PM

Jessie is harvesting bunch berries which have 17 calories per 100 grams. She has lost 15 lbs since day 1.  Food has been more challenging than she expected.  She sets some snare traps along fallen logs

2:04 PM

Jessie is checking her snares and already has a ½ pound squirrel.

Day 14

6:32 AM

Benji 38 F slept well but needs a warmer shelter. So he starts on one on higher ground. He gets a tarp shelter built that may keep him dry, but provides zero warmth.  He shoots a ½ lbs squirrel with his bow.

He has lost 19 lbs and is happy to be here.

10:17 AM

Jessie greets us on the Alone show for a lesson on how to build permanent shelters, with a focus today on roofs.  She is building a high walled lean too, with minimal slope which could prove to be a problem.

2:09 PM

Juan Pablo has his bow and arrows and is hunting.  He shoots but misses a squirrel. He has explored up river and found nothing, but is exploring more area around his shelter.  One grouse on day for was not much to eat.  He is hoping to shoot a bear. He sets up some alarms with cans and pans.

Day 15, 38 F

9:49 AM

Adam is using is leatherman Multi-Tool as a vice to tie fishing flies.  He goes fishing, the wind and water are calm. He is talking about home.  His parents live on 20k per year.

12:44 PM

Jessie is enjoying the sun.  She checks her snare traps, and has a ½ lb squirrel.  It’s mom is trying to call to the dead trapped baby.

3:23 PM

Karie Lee is at the waters edge to wash her hair in a pot of warm water. Her goal today is to build on her shelter, which is far behind many of the others. She has a Tee Pee / A frame like frame built in to a slight hill.

With her tarp wrapped over it, she has a simple shelter.

6:37 PM

Karie Lee is in her shelter with a large fire burning representing a high risk to the tarp plastic wall.

Day 16

10:17

Adam is shooting his bow for target practice as his aim has been a little off.  His fishing spot is exhausted, so he needs to move to another place.  He found a bolete mushroom as he hunts a bear.  He is going to walk inland for a few hours to hunt bear.

Adam kills a 2 lb grouse with his bow and arrows.

Inside his nice shelter, we see him cooking and eating his grouse.

2:22 PM

Benji is fishing with a fishing pole and catches 3 fish at about 4 pounds total.  He sees some beaver activity and shoots one with his bow at 4:27 PM.  The beaver flops around, and disappers.

5:19 PM

Benji is trying to find his beaver that he shot, but is giving up for the day.

He recovers one of his nine arrows on his way back.

9 Remain

Episode 4

9 Remain

Day 17 – 6:52 AM  34F

Benji shot a beaver yesterday (13 hours ago) and is up early to find it.  He bags a 45 lb beaver with his bow, the biggest harvest yet. This is a game changer for Benji, giving him a distinct advantage

10:08 AM

Teimojin is adding some insulation to his cabin, and a log platform to sleep on.  He has lost 23 lbs since day 1.  He decides to focus on snare traps and foraging.  There are many ground squirrel dens around his cabin.  He decides to set some spring pole snares.

2:28

Benji is building a smoker for his beaver, and skinning him.

8:13

Benji is cooking his scrap meat in what looks like a Dutch oven lid and eating it.  He says it taste like beef.

Day 18

5:24 AM

Terry is going to be honest to us.  His body is telling him things it has never told him before.  He has not had a bowel movement for about 12 days. This can leave toxins in his colon, which is not good.

6:27 AM

He is going out to hunt some beaver.

6:49 AM

A beaver is swimming around and Terry passes on a number of possible shots

7:28 AM

Terry is till waiting for the perfect shot, which hasn’t come yet.

8:27 AM

Teimojin is drinking water with some boiled berries.  No meat for 12 days, so he is looking for some squirrels as he checks his snare traps.  He is chopping some fire wood when he hears a flapping sound.  He sees a grouse but didn’t bring his bow with him, which may prove to be a stupid mistake as he returns to get his bow and finds the grouse again, and takes a shot.

9:37 AM

Teimojin shoots a 2 lb grouse with his bow, which is his first kill.  He can use the feathers to make more arrows.  Back at camp, he cleans the grouse for cooking and eating.

12:38 PM

Igor - We see some fish swimming away, then Igor stretching by his unfinished shelter.  He is further behind than most others and has lost 25 lbs already and only has a 2’ high wall.  He begins to fly fish and sees a seal feeding off shore.

2:14 PM

No fish

2:51 PM

Tom is working on his shelter and is actually about even with Igor, before he goes fishing.  He shoots a ¼ lb Whiskey Jack bird with his bow.

He begins fishing.  He hangs a fish…

3:08 PM

Tom catches a 3 lb brook trout with his fly fishing line.

4:23 PM

Igor found a small mussel, probably only an ounce of food, but he is eating it with some sea weed and making a soup.

5:31 PM

Benji is putting his scrap meat out as a draw for bears, and sets his game cams (2 provided) to watch his gut pile.

9:14 PM

Benji needs a better seat in his shelter to sit on.

Day 19

7:43 AM

We see a black bear at the gut pile eating.

Later we find Igor is making some tooth paste from charcoal and brushes his teeth with his finger.

9:53

Igor is working on a solid, heavy cabin but not making much progress. Expending a lot of calories.

11:23

Igor is sawing some large logs for his cabin and making some good progress. Going home and hanging out with his wife sounds good right now.  His back is hurting.

3:29

Terry hasn’t had a bowel movement in 13 days and doesn’t feel well and goes to lay down shortly after 4:00 PM in his nice A frame shelter.  He finally has a bowel movement and feels better.

Day 20

9:02 AM

Igor had a rough night as his body needs food.  He is going to set some snares and go fishing. He is run down from the hard work of building his big log shelter.  He stretches and groans before eating some sea weed for breakfast. He is going walking, hoping to find food.

2:09 PM

Igor has been walking around the forest.  He looks like he is close to quitting.

3:21 PM

Igor is feeling the limits of his body and wants to be sure he is not risking some permanent damage to his body.  Igor taps out on day 20.

Day 21

5:37 AM 35 F

8 Remain

Terry is up early and going to hunt beaver.

6:23 AM

The beaver is back where he was before and Terry makes what looks like a nice shot, but the beaver disappears.  We see him injured and wounded far out.

7:57 AM

Terry is about to swim out 100 yards to get his beaver.  The water is 31F as he wades out.

8:33 AM  39 F

Terry has shot a 45 lb beaver with his bow and recovered him by wading out in 4 feet of water.  He takes it back to camp.

We have reached the Naked & Afraid day (21), where two naked people with one tool each are expected to survive to this point.  Yet we have two well-stocked Alone campers who could not survive this long.  Abet, under colder conditions, but also with the option of taking 10 items including 5 lbs of food.

Here we see the Bow is the predominate tool for harvesting meat.

Benji and Terry look to have a good chance of winning this, followed by Tom in a distant 3rd Place.

8 Remain

Episode 5

Day 21 – 41F

9:24 PM

Benji checked his gut pile and has a black bear coming to eat them.  He is going to wait to kill the bear after it freezes so he can preserve the meat better.  Smoking it would take a ton of work, and possibly still carry germs

Day 22

8:29 AM

Benji Starts bo build a wickup shelter to conserve energy.  It looks much like a stationary tee Pee frame, wrapped with plastics.  He had it up in no time

10:38 AM

Jesse barely has a shelter frame, with what looks like a flat roof as she misses a grouse with her bow.  Her shelter is behind all the others.  She makes a sleeping platform

11:59 AM

Adam has shot a ½ lb Squirrel with his bow, hitting it right through the eye. He shoots another ½ lb squirrel with his bow, hitting it right in the head.  He is obviously a good shot with a bow.  We see his well-insulated shelter and some of the different food and berries he has.

2:43 PM

Juan Pablo is dipping water and apparently drinking it directly from the stream.  He is doing so because boiling water takes a lot of energy.  He says he is Mexican and used to drinking bad water.  This is risky, but could save a lot of time and energy if it doesn’t backfire. He is hungry, with only a few berries the last week or so.  No animal droppings anywhere around him, leaving only fishing as an option for food.  So he is going to build a dock to go out on and fish.  He sees a harbor seal, which is protected by local laws.

Day 23 – 33F

9:31 AM

Karie Lee is sitting at the opening of a partially finished shelter

10:27

Karie is going out hunting, making a lot of noise pushing through the brush, when she hears a squirrel.  She shoots and apparently misses a squirrel from close range.  Skill with a bow is becoming a big factor.

10:31 AM

Karie Lee is searching for her kill but doesn’t find it.  She has lost 20 pounds since day 1.

11:19 AM

Tom has a lot of islands around his camp.  He is in his nice shelter with a good fireplace, carving sticks for making traps.  We go back and see him build his shelter by partially digging in to a hill, and building a fire place with rocks and clay.

12:04 PM

Tom is hungry and going to check his snare traps which he does daily.  The first trap is empty, the second empty, second spring snare is triggered.

12:29 PM

Tom has caught a 2 lb rabbit in a spring snare trap. He is concerned about the meat is bad, but at that temperature, and cooking it well, it should be fine.  He skins the rabbit to make a rabbit stew, and really enjoys eating it.

2:17 PM

Karie Lee is singing and needs to focus on getting food.  Loud singing can scare area game away, making it harder to get food. She is at the water fishing, and gets a bite but it gets away.  She catches a 2 lb brook trout with a fishing pole.  She goes to cook it instead of fishing and catching more while the fish are biting, which is probably a mistake.

Day 24

8:16 AM - 40F

Juan Pablo is not having much luck fishing despite his 8-foot dock, but then catches one, and pulls it nearly in before it gets away.  Then he catches another, a 1lb fish with his fishing pole.

8:48 AM, Juan is still fishing while they are biting and catches another

9;24, he catches his fourth one

9:39 he catches the fifth fish

10:06, Juan catches his 6th fish, all about 1 lb each with his fishing pole or 6 lbs of fish. When he stops and cooks 3 of 6 fish right by the riverside.

11:53 AM

Benji is in his shelter by the fire, sharpening his single-sided ax, which he used every day.  I’d prefer a double-sided if allowed.  He starts to build a fleshing beam to tan his beaver hide. He scrapes the hide and gets a pound or more of meat and fat.  He renders the fat in to about 15,000 calories.

4:27 PM  Benji sees a grouse and misses with two arrows (9 allowed).  The grouse is still high in the tree, so he tries a third shot.

4:43 PM

Benji tries the third shot and drops a 2 lb grouse with his bow. He begins to clean the grouse and harvest his organs.

6:58 PM, he is in his shelter skinning the grouse and beginning to cook it in some beaver grease.  He enjoys eating it.

Day 25

12:48 PM

Adam overslept because he was up late massaging his belly to promote a bowel movement.  He is eating some berries. His stomach is struggling with his diet.  We see him making a wooden spoon, and thinking about what he would spend his winnings on.  He sounds homesick

10:12 PM

Adam thinks he has some gut parasite, probably Giardia.

Day 26

8:58 AM

Benji has a stomach ache and does some kind of hippy yoga-like healing process (Qigong).  He lools for Yarrow for treating his stomach ache.  He has put a lot of meat in his stomach. He is in a strong position, but this could take him out.

12:23 PM

Adam had a nice rest and going to get some birch bark to make a tea for his stomach ache.

2:27 PM

Benji is sleeping on the beach, on his sleeping bag and is burping a lot.

8:31 PM

Adam is drinking his birch bark tea, which is bitter and can promote self-healing.   He is steaming his face with a hot rag.

10:17 PM

Benji has a fever and fills sick.

Day 29

2:04 AM

We hear Benji throwing up.

2:32 AM

Once again he is throwing up

3:04 AM

Again

6:13 AM

Benji hasn’t slept all night. He is stiff and ready to tap out, after being a top contender with a great chance of winning this.  I know he will regret tapping out because he had harvested more meat than any other contestant.  He pushes the button to Tap out on day 29. 7 Remain.

7:24 AM

The boat is on its way to get him.  He was the most the likely winner.  Today he is the 3rd quitter and the 8th place contestant, due to illness, possibly touching his food without washing his hands after handling raw meat.

Episode 6

7 Remain

Day 28 – 35 F

10:47 AM

Terry is building a box for smoking his beaver and we see him eating the head meat off the skull. He has lost 32 lbs since day 1.  Beaver taste like pork but a little gamey. He is slicing the meat with his multi-tool for cooking.

1:42 PM

Tom is in his well insulated shelter making a fly for fishing before going out to find his 4 snares empty.

2:49 PM

Tinjimon

Is in his shelter and is putting a pause on his fishing effort as the water level is going down.  He is setting Paiute deadfall traps when he hears a noise in the trees. He shoots an arrow at a grouse, but misses, but finds his arrow and gets another shot, but misses, and likely lost his arrow.  He lost another arrow in a tree near his camp and seeks to recover it, by climbing the tree.

4:09 PM

Teimojin  recovers an arrow but thinks he shouldn’t try any more tree shots as it looks like he has 4 of 9 arrows left.

10:29 PM

Teimojin is in his shelter around the campfire.  He is talking about being alone before and not having an issue with it, so he thinks being alone will not be an issue for him.

Day 29

6:36 AM

Tom is in his shelter is hunting beaver at daylight, but talking a lot.  He watches a beaver swim near and takes his shot.

8:22 AM

Tom looks for his beaver, but only finds his arrow.

12:17 PM

Terry is checking his smoker after 20 hours of smoking. He eats some smoked meat and drinks some broth from boiled beaver.

Day 30

8:28 AM 36 F

Jessie is not catching any fish, and gill nets are not permitted. She is working on her shelter which is way behind the others, but also bigger.  The roof is nearly flat which can be  a problem   She has lost 30 lbs since day 1

11:09 AM

Juan Pablo is eating fish head gelatin and is going fishing today.

11:41 AM

Juan Pablo is on his deck to fish and finds a big crack in his fishing rod that he must fix.  He isn’t catching any fish, so he goes hunting

12:37 PM

He sees a white weasel but doesn’t take a shot.

1:24 PM

There is a grouse in a tree near camp.  It lands, he shoots and wounds a 2 lb grouse but can’t find it.

2:04 PM

Juan Pablo is looking for his grouse with no success. He found his bloody arrow.

2:49 PM

Teimojin is hunting and gets a 2 lb grouse on the ground. He gets another 2 lb grouse with his bow

3:15 PM

There are a lot of grouse in his area.  He gets another 2 lb grouse with his bow.  He is a good show with a bow and that is making a difference.

Day 31

8:07 AM

Jessie is working hard on her shelter.  At the water’s edge, she sees snow on the mountains.  She has an interesting fire pit made with smaller rocks and a good vent to bring in fresh air.

9:37 AM

She is gathering moss and putting it on the large roof.  She is singing loudly, likely scaring off any game nearby.

12:13 PM

Terry is admiring the beauty before hunting along the rivers edge, but talking way too much.  Sounds like he misses his mother.

1:34 PM – 38 F

Teimojin is brushing his teeth by the rivers edge with some bleeding gums, a sign of malnutrition. He is building a second shelter near the beach.

2:23 pm

He is cutting a big tree to build a lean-to and begins to smoke his grouse.

Day 32

9:09 AM

Jessie is moving to her new shelter. It’s been five days since she had any meat.

5:01 PM

Jessie is fishing with no success.

8:32 PM

Jessie is in her new shelter but with no food.  She builds a fire.

Day 33

9:49 AM – 37 F

Juan Pablo is watching a squirrel working before hunting. He found the grouse that he lost before.  So he has another 2 lb grouse with his bow.  He also shoots a 1 lb weasel.

Sitting by the river he talks about his partner and sounds sad. Being alone is getting to him.

Episode 7

Day 34

9:53 AM

Terry is in his shelter singing there and around his camp which can scare off the game.  We see how skinny he is.  He spent over 2 hours recording a music video, a total waste of time and energy but helps deal with being alone.  Next he is trimming fat off his beaver hide to eat, having most of his beaver over the past 10 days.  He has lost 49 pounds since day one….. WOW!

He puts his beaver hide in his smoker.

12:47 PM – 32F

Jessie is peeling bark off for her shelter to catch more water and dispense it when needed.  Her low slope roof provides for better water catchment, a potential best practice, but could be a problem if snow builds up on it.

5:39 PM

Jessie is cooking a ½ lb squirrel which she caught in a snare.

8:49 PM

Terry is eating deep-fried beaver fat bits, which is high in calories but increase the risk of a stroke.

Day 35 – 33 F

11:29 AM

Adam is struggling to split wood (wasted energy) and hears a grouse fly off, then hears it again.  He harvests a 2 lb grouse with his bow. Then he hears another and shoots it (2 lb grouse) with his bow. Both right in his camp; lucky, yes, but he hits both on his first shot.  He should go hunting for more while they seem to be active and around, but he doesn’t.  He stops and cleans them.

2:43 PM Walking back from the water where he cleaned his grouse, Adam sees a wooden pallet or dock. He disassembles it using the back of his axe like a hammer.

Day 36

7:29 AM

Tom is in his shelter making a lamp using a shell to reflect light from his head lamp.

10:24 AM

Tom is cutting some wood logs for his shelter and working on it.

2:11 PM

Tom said that he has eaten

1.    15 Squirrels

2.    19 Trout

3.    5 Grouse

4.    1 Rabbit

5.    1 Whiskey Jack

6.    And a lot of bunch berries.

Yet he still has lost 44 pounds.

Tom is hunting and sees a squirrel

2:34 PM

Tom shoots and kills the ½ lb squirrel with his bow.  Then he finds a lot of bunchberries, which are high in fiber.  He hears a 2 lb grouse and shoots it with his bow.  Back at his shelter, he is roasting his squirrel over the fire with fur and all. He has tried them 3 ways and likes this the best.

Day 37 – 31 F

9:33 AM

Karie Lee exits her open-front shelter where she is cooking fruit leather (2-month shelf life outside) to preserve the fruit, which may be a best practice since berries will disappear quickly with heavy snow.

Day 39

9:26 AM

Adam is building a bench to sit on from the wood he found.  Next he is making a nice door for his shelter.  I would use an H shaped lift and drop door that lifts into slots and drops behind a stop board.

12:43 PM

Terry sees a unique bird overhead, a Pine Grossbeak, as he hunts along the river.  His river area is shallow and rocky as he starts to fish.

2:17 PM

Terry is tired, and hungry and sits down before starting back to camp empty-handed.

Day 40

8:53 AM

Tom has several islands around his river site.  We find him in his shelter, stoking his fire to life.  He is very tired and is making a bird snare.  His beaver lasted him a week.  Now he goes hunting with his bow.  He finds some green Lichen growing on a log, a source of carbs, but not tasty.  His bird snare is tripped, but no bird.

11:24 AM

Teimojin  is throwing up a rock while doing a magic trick.  He uses a pair of underwear for a camp flag. He is going hunting, expecting food to become scarce. He shoots at a squirrel with 1 of the 3 arrows that he has and misses, shoots again, misses, last arrow, shoots again and gets the ½ lb squirrel with this bow.

2:18 PM

Teimojin is cleaning his squirrel, rather than hunting for more while they are active.  He is talking a lot about his mom… getting homesick.

Day 41

10:14 AM

Karie Lee announces her moms birthday as we see about 4 of 9 arrows with her bow.  She has obviously wasted time and energy making her mom a dirt/grass cake.  She is getting homesick.  She goes hunting for food, still talking about her mom.  She catches a ½ lb squirrel in her snare trap.

7:28 PM

Karie Lee is in her shelter eating her skinned, fire-roasted squirrel which has about 540 calories.

Day 42 - 34 F

8:53 AM

Terry got a message that today is a med check day.  His stomach is highly emaciated with his rib cage protruding, and his arms are bony.   He is tending his fire and boiling some water.

10:53 AM

The Med Crew weighs Terry, checks his Oxygen level, and examines his stomach which is painful.  The med team confers

12:19 PM

Med Team is concerned about his condition, showing dehydration, and running a fever.  They are going to extract him for Medical reasons.  So a Medical Tap Out on Day 42.  Now both guys who harvested a beaver are sick, and out of the contest.

Day 42

6 Remain

2:03 PM

Tom is sawing a log that is 42 years old and hard as two sets of woodpecker lips.   He is building some time of brush shelter, in front of his tarp shelter… possibly a smoker?  Chopping a tree down he fell and may be hurt.

In his shelter, he says his back hurts at a pain level of 7.

Day 43

2:37 AM

Tom is hurting and can’t sleep, and maybe his last leg.

6 Remain

Episode 8

Day 42

9:28 AM

Karie Lee is eating her fruit leather and observes her teeth are turning black.  She is using horsetail, which is rich in silica and can help restore tooth enamel.  She cooks it to make toothpaste, which helps a little.  She is not getting any fish now and is bow fishing with a homemade rig, targeting a muskrat. One surfaces, and she isn’t alert and doesn’t initially see him until it is too late.

4:42 Still nothing

6:47 Karie Lee is back in her shelter, stoking her fire.  Thinking about her ancestors with no grocery stores.

Day 43

5:42 AM – 37 F

Tom is in his sleeping bag and gets up after hurting his back on day 42, cutting a tree down.  He got very little sleep.  He has lost 38 pounds and plans to hunt beaver.  One pound of beaver meat contains 110 grams of protein and 660 calories. This may be his last hope of continuing in the contest.

He is by the water at sunrise to hunt beaver, which is a very elusive animal.  He is cold, tired, sore, and possibly on his last leg

8:32 AM, no beaver and goes back to camp to eat lichen, which repeatedly boiling reduces its high acid content and makes it easier to eat.  He then seals leaks in his fireplace chimney when he slips and falls.

9:38 AM

Tom has fallen, not a hard fall under normal circumstances, but he is slow getting up in his weakened condition.  His right knee is injured.  Each contestant has an emergency first-aid kit, and he applies a wrap to his knee.  It sounds like he is ready to quit. No food, and likely to struggle to get firewood.  With his hurt knee, Tom taps out on day 43.  He hasn’t moved from where he crawled to wrap his knee.  He wants to stay, but his body isn’t up to it.  He packs to leave.  The crew helps him walk to the boat to go.

11:17 AM

5 People Remain

Karie Lee has been working on a song and will sing it for us.  She is going back to the river to hunt muskrat. She sees one come up on shore, shoots, and quickly goes to catch the injured Muskrat.

12:43 PM

Karie Lee finished the injured muskrat with her knife.  With a close-range shot, she has killed a 2 lb Muskrat with her bow and arrows and roasts it over the fire.  It tastes delicious as it starts snowing.

1:36 PM

Adam is making a Halloween grouse costume, a complete waste of energy, but it likely helps the mentality of the contestants.  He is using the wood from his pallet to improve his shelter, potentially the best one in this competition.

2:42 PM

Jessie is working on her large and solid shelter, but not finished; it still has a way to go and needs a lot of moss or mud between the logs.  She is belching a lot as she plans to go off to check her rabbit traps.  She has invested a lot of time and effort in her still unfinished shelter.  She finds nothing in her snare traps which we know are a low-yield food source.

4:02 PM

Teimojin shot a 1/2 lb squirrel with his bow and dispatched it with a club.  He hears a grouse and goes to look for it.  He sees it, shoots it, and kills a 2 lb grouse with his bow.  He finds that he can get closer by looking away as you approach the game.

4:27 PM

Juan Pablo is at the river to fish.  He can see fish activity far from shore as fish move to deeper water in cold weather.  He will extend his fishing pier (dock) further out into the water and quickly has it done.

4:59 PM

He is fishing and quickly catches a small fish with his line, then another and another, weighing about 3 pounds.  His investment of time to extend his pier seems to have paid off.  Getting access to deep water fishing in cold weather may be a Best Practice to keep in mind for our Lesson Learned post.

6:34 PM

Juan Pablo is cooking his fish but doesn’t feel like eating right now.

8:12 PM

He still hasn’t eaten.  Starvation has killed his appetite, and he doesn’t want to throw up.  He should eat a small amount over time, another Lesson Learned.

Day 44

9:23 AM

Adam continues his Halloween skit and gives his trick-or-treat visitor (himself) berries.  He recognizes this makes him look insane.

11:48 AM

Karie Lee has a Halloween costume.  This is likely some foolish requirement or rule from the show.

7:17 PM

Teimojin is in his smokey shelter as he talks about some unknown holiday or festival, again probably some stupid show requirement or recommendation. We can see tears running down his face.

9:32 PM

I’m guessing Jessie will now show us her foolish activity as we see her talking about cookies without milk in her shelter before throwing up in her fire.

9:52 PM

Jessie is sick to her stomach, throwing up substantial volumes on or by her fire.  She isn’t eating; she will try another pot full of water after eating some Charcoal.

10:21 PM

She is eating charcoal to absorb excess stomach acid.  A Lesson Learned from this might be to consider including some charcoal in your diet as a Best Practice when you are not eating. She should also start sipping small amounts of water when her stomach settles.

10:41 PM

Jessie feels better after eating charcoal.  She seems determined.

Day 45

8:26 AM

Adam has been feeling extremely homesick, like never before, and may be getting close to quitting.  He is heading out to see what he can find to eat.  He finds another river with beaver and possibly fish, but it appears shallow.  This resource could be a massive help for him.  His exploring may have been lacking.  A Lesson Learned may be to explore the area in an organized way.

Adam sees his first rabbit (hare) and shoots his bow.

3:43 PM

Adam has killed a 2 lb rabbit with his bow.

6:58 PM

Adam is cooking (boiling) and eating his rabbit (hare) and squirrel.  Boiling retains all the nutrients.

8:03 PM

Adam is eating his first snowshoe hare and finds it to be delicious.  His new river area is a long hike but has proven fruitful.

8:46 PM

Jessie is in her shelter, her stomach upset again, like acid reflux.  She is going to eat the charcoal again.

10:17 PM

She throws up four times again in large volumes and is likely to become dehydrated.  She probably needs to try a smaller volume of water more frequently; a good Lesson Learned.

11:48 PM

She is in bed feeling bad after throwing up and pledging not to tap out.

Day 46

3:43 PM

Jessie failed to confirm her regular medical check this morning, and the boat is on its way as the safety crew was immediately dispatched.  They find her in her cabin in bed. They question her about throwing up 9 or 10 times and begin to examine her.  She is likely a medical tap-out on Day 46.  The med team talks and approaches her.  Her stomach lining is inflamed, and she cannot care for herself, so Jessie is being medically extracted (Tap out) Day 46.

4 Remain

The Bow & Arrows is the clear leader in harvesting meat, with a fishing line in a distant second place.  Snare production may increase when the snow falls and trails can be clearly seen.

Episode 9

4 Remain

Day 47 - 35F

9:24 AM

Karie Lee signs a song a friend wrote, which I’m not sure helps or hurts with the loneliness.  She is hiking to the river behind her camp sight.  She misses a tree top squirrel and her arrow bounces back, then she misses again and loses her arrow, but searches and finds it.  She sings as she hunts, which is not a good idea for obvious reasons.  She harvests no meat on this hunt.

Day 48

8:42 AM

Adam didn’t sleep well and is still in bed.  He is really hungry and not likely to last much longer.  We see the water edge freezing.  Dressing, he goes hunting on a windy day (40 mph).  Wind spooks game and they don’t move much.  He hunts every day for 3-5 hours, with the best results following the river and finding grouse.  Grouse move into denser, more mature forests to stay warm in the winter.  Adam has lost 61 pounds. He had an arrow fall out of his quiver and begins to backtrack to try and find it.  Traveling through the dense brush is exhausting  He should be looking for game trails to travel on.  He stops to rest. Looking for a lost arrow, he is unlikely to see any game, and his legs are tired.  He started with 9 arrows and has 4 left.  None of the candidates have seen any big game.  He is back at camp with ½ a grouse left from his last kill.

12:13 PM – 23 F

Juan Pablo didn’t sleep much with the noisy wind and plans to make some ear plugs from a tee shirt to help him sleep.  He is going to hang his sleeping bag so the feathers don’t clump up and work to improve his bed to make it more comfortable.  We see increasing freezing of the river.  Ice Fishing may soon become an option.

2:42 PM – 23 F

Teimojin goes for water.  His creek is frozen over, but he can break it with his pan. He has been trained in arctic survival. Food is the most critical factor.  He is focusing on squirrels which seem to be the most abundant food supply. The wind is limited at his site.  He has lost 44 pounds since day 1.  He has two squirrels run right by him. He shoots and misses. He is tired and sits down to rest.  His speech is blurred as he talks.  It looks as if he has about 6 of 9 arrows left.

8:22 PM, he is in his shelter, missing his girlfriend.  Missing family is one of the signs that he is near tapping out.  It is snowing as he goes to sleep.

Day 49

11:14 AM – 22 F

Karie Lee admires the beautiful morning before going off to check her trap line and may set up more.  Setting snare traps after the snow is a good idea as you can easily see the animal trails.  She is going to focus more on trapping food, which has been a low yield method with only 2% of the total, but the odds improve with the snow. Her thumbs are split from the cold weather.

6:41 PM

Karie Lee is back in her shelter after setting 5 more traps but harvesting no meat.  She has been unable to hit squirrels with her bow, which is the top tool for harvesting meat with 74% of the total.  She is talking about her failures, as she gets closer to tapping out.

Day 50

9:24 AM

We see a river about half frozen as Teimojin plans to set traps using gut from his kills, near the river for birds.  He wants to have as many food harvesting strategies as he can.  He is eating every day, but not enough.  He seems feeble trying to use a bow drill and keeps dropping the tools. He uses a perch trap for birds, which I’ve never seen used.

11:41 AM – 19 F

Adam won’t be wasting any time eating breakfast today as he has none. The river has about 20% ice at his location.  He is steadily losing weight.  No new bear sign anywhere.  He sees a grouse, shoots, and kills a 2 lb grouse with his bow.  With some success, he should take a different route back and look for more grouse, but we see him at the river cleaning his grouse.  We see the river here mostly frozen, but lightly.

We learn that 6 former Alone contestants will return on a winter show called Alone Frozen.

12:21 PM – 24 F

Juan Pablo is in his sleeping bag.  He is wearing new wool socks today as a treat to himself.  He first goes for water from the river.  The river looks still with ice covering most of it. But his pier still extends into open water that he could fish in. It appears that he drinks the water direct from the river.  He is considering hunkering down, recognizing he only needs to stay one day longer than the other contestants, much like you don’t have to out run the bear, just out run the other person.

Day 51

12:19 PM

Karie Lee shows us that the river is frozen over although we have some icy flow right in the middle.  She will hunt and trap today, using her fishing pole as a walking stick now.

Note that fishing has harvested 23% of the total meat, second only behind the bow at 74%. Karie Lee has 4% of the total meat harvested

2:14 PM

Checking her trap line, which was recently expanded after the first snow, Kerie Lee has harvested a ½ lb squirrel with a snare trap.  It is frozen, obviously caught the previous day.

5:57 pm

Totally dark outside, Kerrie Lee is in her shelter eating the legs of her squirrel and singing.

Day 52

7:43 AM

Teimojin is building snare traps for squirrels.  Since he has not been traping, he may have an abundant supply.  He knows his hunting grounds and has them divided into sectors.  We hear a crow cawing.  Wild animals recognize this as a warning.

8:51 AM

Teimojin sees that his bird trap is triggered, but no bird.   We see that about 80% of the river is frozen to a limited degree.  He resets his bird trap as we see snow building up on the river ice.  Another part of the river is only about 30% frozen.  He throws sizeable rocks out on the ice and they don’t break through.  The wind pick up and he heads home

1:52 PM

We see an aerial view of the river 90% frozen.  Adam is taking his shirt off and looks scary thin with some loose skin.  He doesn’t know what to do.  He is losing a pound a day.  No one on this show has ever thrived on small game, so he is going bear hunting.  Walking uphill is exhausting. He is weak and not likely to last much longer. Finding nothing, he states he has reached a critical juncture and he is going to have to call it. No one is seeing any bear signs, as they are usually shy and move away from humans where possible.

3:52 PM

Back at camp Adam sees a spruce grouse within easy shooting range, but doesn’t bother trying to shoot it.  He has given up. Adam Taps out on Day 52.  Listening to their rational for taping out is depressing, and this time is no exception.

Only 2.5 lbs of meat harvested this week from the 4 contestants.

3 Remain

Episode 10

3 Remain

Day 53

8:36 AM – 27F

Teimojin is checking his snare traps and has a live ½ Lb squirrel that is struggling to escape.  He finished him with a club.

Karie Lee is making a snow angel and getting her clothes wet. The river is mostly frozen with some flow in the center.  Here shelter still has no front on it. She wants to build a cob oven.   She wraps a pile of wood with clay

11:53 AM

Karie Lee is adding a wood chimney to her cob oven, and covering it with clay, before starting it.  As the wood chimney burns out, the opening allows the smoke to escape, but the oven collapses.

Day 54

9:27 AM - 28F

Juan Pablo is in his shelter and dressed fully in his sleeping bag for warmth, attempting a form of hibernation.  He gets up and reinforces his shelter to support snow build up, which can be 60 inches in a day.

11:49 AM

Teimojin is inside his shelter looking for places to insulate it further.  He goes outside to get some spruce boughs to stop the wind blowing into his shelter.  He has lost 49 pounds since day 1. Pulling on some boughs, one snaps and he falls.

1:28 PM

Teimojin is not injured from his fall.

2:06 PM

Teimojin is taking a break, and drinking some water.  He has a lot of reindeer moss, cranberries and ½ of a grouse that he is saving.

Day 55

9:21 AM – 22 F

Karie Lee heard an animal outside last night. She shows some of the fruit leather she made.  She goes hunting and to check her snare traps.  Snow makes it easy to see tracks to know where to set traps.

12:17 PM

Her traps are covered with snow with no food.  Here traps are marked with ribbon, but she is struggling to find them in the snow.

6:34 PM

Karie Lee is back in her shelter, with no food harvested today.  She expects it to get really cold.

Day 56

9:24 AM – 22 F

Juan Pablo is in his sleeping bag experiencing 43 MPH winds.  It is not a good day to be out, but he needs water and goes to the river which is covered with snow.

11:54 AM

Karie Lee is in her shelter but must go pee. We see snow covered every where.

1:43 PM

Teimojin has a walking stick he is using. He thinks he hears grouse flapping and goes hunting.

Day 57

10:14 AM – 19 F

Juan Pablo is in his sleeping bag, experiencing 51 MPH wind gusts.  He has been in his sleeping bag a lot lately.

12:33 PM

Teimojin is in his sleeping bag with the strong winds blowing.  This seems to be a common activity now.

1:42 PM

Karie Lee is spending the day gathering firewood, mostly small sticks.  Snow is everywhere, it is windy and cold. So windy, her camera blew over.

Day 58

7:36 AM

Teimojin is in his shelter.  He is really cold and hungry, boiling Reindeer moss to eat which must be boiled several times to get rid of acid. It doesn’t have much nutritional value. He pours water on his shelter to form ice insulation.  Going to get water is exhausting.

1:01 PM

Juan Pablo is getting water and stepping through the ice.  That is why you want waterproof shoes.  The wind is unexpected for him.  He needs to hydrate.  He has been drinking untreated water for 10 years & doesn’t burn a fire unless he needs to cook. He is the first person in Alone history to not maintain a fire, saving a lot of calories.  He is trying to do the 20% of the work that will give 80% of the benefit.

Day 59

8:44 AM – 24 F

Juan Pablo is getting water from the frozen river by chopping a whole with his axe. Clear ice has no air and id denser and safer to walk on.  4” thick is considered to walk on.

10:03 AM

Juan Pablo is planning to walk out on the ice but hasn’t eaten in 9 days.  He is making an ice chisel.

11:18 AM

Karie Lee found that her pants got frozen shut. She goes for tree sap and sees a squirrel on the ground and shots at it with her bow.

1:24 PM

Karie Lee bags a ½ lb squirrel with her bow.  She is back at her shelter eating her fresh kill.  The trees are covered in snow.

Day 60

9:19 AM

Juan Pablo is clipping his toenails.  Taking care of your feet is important. He piles snow on his shelter for insulation.

4:03 PM

It is nearly dark as Juan Pablo seeks to fill any cracks in his shelter. He doesn’t burn a fire unless he needs to cook.

Day 61

8:53 AM – 23 F

Teimojin chipped his tooth chewing on a bone.

10:47 AM

Teimojin is out to check snares and hunt.  Seeing no tracks in the snow is not a good sign.  Heavy snowfall covers them quickly.  He is short of breath and must rest, as he pushes his limit. He almost fell and didn’t find any game in his traps.  He returns to his bear hang where he was saving some grouse. Back in his shelter, he is eating the grouse and reindeer moss or about 450 calories.

3 Remain, two strategies A) find food or B) do nothing, save calories & tough it out.

Episode 11

3 Remain

Day 62

8:43 AM – 14 F

Teimojin is out on the coldest day yet after the area received 12 inches of snow overnight.  He is going to get some firewood. He has lost 54 lbs since day 1, despite having a 2 qt pot of food the night before.  He gets an arm load of sticks and is exhausted and going to take a break.

12:47 PM

Karie Lee is playing in the snow, wasting precious calories but likely helping her mental health.  She has lost 49 pounds since day 1. Going to check her trap lines, she sees a squirrel.

2:07 PM

Karie Lee shoots her bow at a squirrel and misses.

3:16 PM

Juan Pablo is once again in his sleeping bag, with the door to his shelter open and with no fire burning.  Ice cycles are breaking off the trees and knocking holes in his tarp roof.  He may need some boughs to avoid this. He sews a patch on a hole, and did a good job using his wire as a needle.

Day 63

8:01 AM – 17 F

Teimojin is going out to get some water.  His cold weather survival training should give him an edge at this point.  He is exhausted after walking to get water, and after sleeping well last night.  He is looking forward to hugging his mom at the airport.  How much is enough?  He is close to quitting.  He has another idea to try.

10:14 AM

Teimojin takes his tarp and some paracord and packs his stuff to walk out on his own.  Teimojin is tapping out on Day 63. Now we must listen to his rationalization for quitting.  Not that we could do better, but we are disappointed to see him leave, knowing his is so close to winning.

Day 64

2 Remain

9:47 AM – 15 F

Juan Pablo is going for water and seems to have good agility.  He has not had a fire in his shelter for 62 days since he built it. He builds a fire in his small fireplace. It smokes up his place and makes him sick.

Day 65

9:08 AM

Juan Pablo used paint cans for his chimney and it stinks really bad, so he is going to redo his stove chimney.

10:21 AM

He removes some of the can’s and replaces them.

1:41 PM

Juan uses some clay to rebuild his stove

6:19 PM

His repaired stove is ready to use.  He was missing his family and friends, but is determined and his strategy looks good.  His stove is working now and has a very small fire in it.

Day 66

8:47 AM

Karie Lee, a tough semi-finalist at the age of 57, is eating fruit leather, but knows she can’t eat much or she gets a stomach ache.  The fruit leather provides a good energy surge.  She struggles to pull her bow back for hunting and heads back to camp.  She is having a hard time.

10:17 AM

She is talking about a friend with cancer to who she is dedicating her adventure on Alone.  This is keeping her going.

Day 67

8:24 AM

Juan Pablo is going to grab the camera as he sees a polar bear.  Now he is not sure it was real as he doesn’t see it now that he has his camera

9:13: AM

Karie Lee is gathering wood to make snow skis, I suspect she means now shoes.  This is a good idea as it will save a lot of calories when walking through the snow.

9:58 AM

Juan Pablo is getting water from a hole in the ice, but not ice fishing.

Day 68

2:17 PM – 25 F

Karie Lee is not thinking about tapping out, but was.

7:48 PM

Juan Pablo has a back ache when he realizes his fire has died out.  He chops some wood dangerously and could hurt his hand.

Day 69

11:31 AM

Karie Lee is tired today which has 7 hours of daylight at this time of year.  She might make some tea and go back to bed.

3:12 PM

Juan Pablo is in his shelter using foul language that has to be bleeped out.

Day 70

1:41 PM

Karie Lee is sitting in her shelter taking today moment by moment.

4:13 PM

Juan Pablo is sitting on his bench he made by the river.

Day 71

7:26 AM (dark)

Karie Lee is tossing and turning all night in her sleeping bag.  Not enough fat to cushion her joints.

Day 72

12:13 AM

Juan Pablo is recording at an odd time, why?  Go to bed.

1:12 PM

Karie Lee is in her shelter trying to stay warm in her sleeping bag

3:49 PM

Juan Pablo is in his sleeping bag staring, not even blinking.

Day 73

10:24 AM

Juan Pablo is in his shelter, with the door open as usual.  He hasn’t been eating.  So he is going for a walk, in hopes of being mentally much better.  He wants to walk on the ice.  Unless he can go ice fishing and has poles that will support him if he falls, this is an unnecessary risk.  He is very emotional, starving, and alone, he keeps thinking he is so thankful for Jennifer his girlfriend, and he is going to propose.

Day 74

9:02 AM

Karie Lee is in her shelter having trouble getting out after six inches of new snow fell overnight.  Here spirits are good, her body is tired and she is light-headed.  She is about to tap, crying as she enjoys the beauty of the area.  She leaves the camera and returns with a sign:  Do your dream, her one picture or photo that she gets to bring. She is broken… no, she is not done today, but is close.

Day 75

8:42 AM – 14 F

Karie Lee is sitting in her shelter with the door open, craving healthy food, holding the tap-out radio.   She shows us that she can’t pull her bowstring back, so she can’t get any food.  She is crying again.  Karie Lee Taps out on Day 75 after nearly becoming the first woman to win this event.  She sees the helicopter coming and they are filming her telling her rationale for quitting, after being SO close.  At 57, she is one tough woman.  With a few less mistakes, she could have been the winner.

Day 78

10:13 AM

1 Remain

Juan Pablo, the $500,000 winner says his body is asking for a full day off recovery, doing nothing.  He hears an alarm going off for a Med Check in one hour when he is dehydrated, so he starts to drink water and starts a fire to heat more water so he can drink it fast so he can drink more water.

The medics question him as we see his girlfriend approaching.

12:47 PM

She walks up to him and grabs his shoulder and hugs him. He shows her his shelter.  We see the river covered with snow near his bench but flowing rapidly in others. We see them flying off in the helicopter.

Juan Pablo’s unique strategy paid off for the $500,000 win!
