Inexpensive first gun

You can buy a good first gun and some ammo for around $200, and it could save the life of you or your family some day.  It is better to have a gun and not need it than to need one and not have it.

But beware, as there are a lot of cheap, unreliable guns that you want to avoid. IF cost is not an issue, see our post on selecting the Best Handgun.

But if you are on a tight budget and wanting your first handgun, my recommendation is a Western Revolver in 22 LR but also with a 22 WMR cylinder.

My friends & I own several of these so let me tell you why I recommend this pistol.
  1. It is reliable, easy to shoot and has a high level of safety.
  2. It costs less than $180 not including a $13 #7 size holster.
  3. Target ammo (50 rounds) costs about $3.00
  4. Personal Protection Ammo (50 rounds) costs under $15.

What is the Right Amount of Ammo? Start with at least 1 box of 22 WMR Personal Protection rounds, and get as many of the target rounds as you can afford.  For $260, you can get 5,000 of the target rounds.  You can buy a holster later.

The target rounds are very affordable for lots of target practice, while the Hornady Personal Protection rounds have 100 foot pounds of energy, which is the equivalent of dropping 100 pounds a distance of one foot, or dropping one pound a distance of 100 feet.  While this is not a typical personal defense weapon like a .357 Magnum, a .41 or a .45, but it is far better than nothing.

If you can't afford an expensive gun, this one is a good one to start with.
