Best Prepper Retreat

When it is time to bugout, what is the Best Prepper Retreat? Underground shelter is good against storms, radioactive fallout and is hidden, but when found, you are trapped. A nuclear missile shelter will have substantial security and while a candidate for the Best ranking, there are not many for sale.  This might be the best shelter in many scenarios, especially against a nuclear attack, but it could also be a primary target.

Before gun powder, a good Fort was ideal location for defending against a much larger enemy.  But with the invention of canons, being stationary meant death in a Fort. This leads to a more Nomadic Prepper Strategy.

While having an isolated  island would certainly add an element of security, you are trapped in one location.  Imagine if you could have an island you could hide or relocate.

Enter the Solar Powered Sail Boat, an island on the move.

Imagine powering the fridges, the freezer, the ice maker, the fresh water maker, the water heater and the air conditioning without hearing a generator. Then, imagine taking hot showers, lighting up the boat from the masthead to well below the waterline, and never worrying about energy consumption. This can be done on the Voyage Electric 480 Electrified. Built by Voyage Yachts in Cape Town, South Africa, the 48-footer has a 48-volt, 35-kWh lithium-ion battery bank that is recharged by 16 solar panels, propeller-generated energy and a virtually silent 22-kW diesel generator.

Think of the extended isolation that a family could achieve.  This makes a sail boat type water craft like this the best Bug Out Retreat, but additional preparations are necessary.

Fishing is a great way to obtain food, so add a fish finder, fishing poles, trot lines, small commercial fishing net, a small shrimp net, a cast net and lots of rope to tie the fish nets to the boat.

Because much of the diet will be fish & sea weed, having high protein foods like beans, beef jerky and beef/chicken bouillon.  Mountain House freeze dried foods with a 40 year shelf life will help supplement your fish diet.  It might be good to have a small potted plant Garden.

You should also have some form of land transportation like a bicycle, that will fit in a life boat, so you can anchor at sea, take a small boat ashore and then ride a bicycle around while on land. You should have long and short range types of communication, on the main boat, the small boat, on the land transportation, and short range on the hip of security personnel.

For Security, each adult should have an AR-15 with at least 5,000 rounds of Ammo each. Have at least one of them (preferably 2) with a thermal scope, one with a rechargeable battery. Having two allows you to have one charged at all times.  Also have at lease one really long range Rifle like a 308, a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 338 Lapua with a long range scope sighted at a distance of at least 500 yards, preferably at 1,000 yards.

Each Adult should also be wearing a Glock 17 and have 1,000 rounds available for it and have a well stocked Back Pack.  Have some Glocks strategically cached around the boat. A high powered telescope and several pairs of high powered binoculars should also be available for a full time 24-7 Security Watch

Ok, maybe this is not affordable for most people, it is still the best bugout retreat, and an old sailboat restored could be just as valuable in a serious SHTF scenario.

Backpack Selection Criteria

There are many factors to consider when selecting a backpack, where the choice will vary by person.  But let me tell you some important ones that everyone will want to know about.
  1. Backpack size is important.  You want it large enough to carry all the items you will need (not want).  But not so big that it is hard to carry.  The US Military 3-Day Assault Pack , available at most real military surplus stores , is approximately 1750 cubic inches and carries the bare minimum to last a soldier for 3 days including Ammo. This pack rides high to enable carrying other gear, including a fanny pack, or a pistol, around your waste.  However, this pack may be small for most civilians, and a high riding pack is harder to carry for long periods, due to the leverage it has on your shoulders. An Osprey pack like the one pictured here, rides close to the back and will be easier to wear for long periods The US Army Ruck Sack is larger with optional add-on storage and holds around 4,500 cubic inches.  No one camps out more than the US Military, and their products are top quality and all Made in the USA.  IF it is NOT made in the USA, then it is NOT real Military and don't buy it as such.  There are however many good non-Military Packs available from quality, trusted stores like REI who also offers a lot of Expert Advice online AND in the stores, to help pick the right backpack, but also what to put in it. There are a number of other Back Pack Guides, but note they are often biased toward products they sell. While Military Surplus packs usually offer the best value, more expensive packs tailored for comfort and convenience can be excellent.  My first choice for these is www.REI.com and please note, I receive no compensation for this recommendation, and make it only because they have an excellent products and return policy. Starting with a small pack, will force you to pack light or hiking. But a bugout pack should be a larger one.
  2. Backpack weight, especially when full, is also important.  The greater the distance you will be packing, the more important this becomes. The average person can only pack about 15 to 20% of their body weight any distance. A typical adult pack might weigh 30 to 45 pounds.  Athletes, and soldiers can carry up to 80 pounds, but it is torture. Water weights 8.4 pounds per gallon, and you need to drink at least one gallon per day; up to 3 gallons (25.2 lbs) per day in arid conditions. Having smart EDC carry items will reduce your pack load.  Multi-purpose items can also reduce your pack weight; for example, using your poncho as a tent tarp. Think light, plan light.
  3. Backpack Straps are important for comfort, especially on long trips.  They must be comfortable on the shoulders and hips (must have hip straps), and also have a chest strap to keep the shoulder straps from sliding off.  Notice how the REI Backpacks, conform to the back.
  4. Backpack Color can be important.  Are you evading an enemy and need a outdoor color, or lost,  want to be seen, and need a bright color?
  5. Pockets and compartments can really help organize your gear, but be sure the main compartment is large enough to carry your bigger items, like a tent / bivy sack, and modular sleeping bag, &/or a Hennessy style Hammock.
  6. Water resistant is good, but also pack your contents in water proof containers

Now it is time to get yourself a pack, and take our Survival Test.  Our Alone Series will give you some good ideas on what to carry in your pack.

EDC - Women

Every Day Carry or EDC Survival, is the most common survival scenario, where a person must survive with only what they carry on a daily basis.  In this post, we are focused only on what a Woman could easily carry on them.

In discussing this, its important to note that most women are more discriminating than men in what they wear, which limits what they might carry on their person.  For example, women are not likely to wear survival jewelry, or fish hook ear rings, or a para cord bracelet, but it they will, great!  There are some beautiful options. But also, women are more inclined to carry a purse which gives them far more options.  Without her purse, a woman can be at a disadvantage survival wise compared to a man, but with it she can have a huge advantage.

What a woman should / could carry on her person every day
  1. Charged cell phone; don't let it get too low!
  2. Money - Cash, in small bills & a few coins.
  3. * A small key chain knife, and there are many options in this category.  A multi-function fingernail clipper for example; or a key shaped multi-function tool, or a key shaped knife, or even better, a discrete key shaped folding knife.  Pick one or more that suits your needs.
  4. A decorative Tactical Key Chain ring. A pack 5 different colors is only $10.
  5. Key Chain Pepper Spray.
  6. Key Chain Compass.
  7. Key Chain Whistle.
  8. Comfortable shoes for walking great distances (NOT flip flops or sandals).
  9. Comfortable clothing that will protect you from the sun or cool weather.
  10. * Concealed Carry pistol with extra rounds of ammo.
So lets discuss what she might carry in her purse as this practice gives her a distinctive advantage over a man.
  1. A phone charger for plug AND Auto (very important).
  2. * A Leatherman Multi-Tool
  3. * A Magnesium Fire starter  & bic lighter for starting fire
  4. Band aids (with antibiotic) or small first aid kit.
  5. Condom (un-lubricated) or small metal bottle for carrying water.
  6. A Tactical Pen.
  7. Waterproof covering, wind breaker or survival blanket.
  8. * Extra rounds of ammo.
  9. Long shelf life snack foods or beef jerky.
  10. Water Filter Straw.
  11. Water Treatment Tablets.
* Cannot be carried in certain places such as when flying.

Now I can already hear many of the women I know saying "I'm not putting all that junk in my purse."  Okay, that is fine; you can still pick out a few of them to add.

As you think about what to carry, remember the Rule of 3.
